Lift-the-flaps: Books For Kids

Who doesn’t love a good lift-the-flap book? One of the biggest benefits of reading—in addition to the vocabulary, comprehension and even math skills boost—is the special bond it creates overtime between the parent (or grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, friend, etc.) and child. As you sit close together, focused on the same thing and having a shared experience you can draw on together later, everyone gets the warm fuzzies. Especially for younger children, including a mix of interactive books in your reading (such as lift-the-flap books!) can help keep littles interested and truly engaged with what they’re reading and helps make reading fun. Without further ado, here are some of our very favorite lift-the-flap books we know that you and your little-fingered friends will adore!

If You See a Cow book
If You See a Cow
Written by Richard Powell and illustrated by Ana Martín Larrañaga
board book
Recommend Ages: 1-4
Thoughts from The Book Snob Mom

This book is simple and cute, and teaches simple animal noises for farm animals. The lift-the-flaps are cut outs (rather than always being squares), which makes it easier for little fingers to find a hold and are surprising sturdy and hold up well—just watch out for the pig page because that’s the ONE FLAP that opens a different direction and if your munchin tries too vigorously to open it the way they’ve opened the last three it may tear.

In this interactive novelty board book, little ones discover and react to the animals hidden behind a shaped flap on every spread. What should you do if you see a cow? Moo! Young readers will love following the instructions to make animal sounds and discovering which farm animal is hiding behind the flaps.
