Bookroo's summary

Five adventurers leave the comfort of their island home, driven by curiosity about what lies beyond. Their journey unfolds into a tale of discovery, danger, and imagination. As they confront the unknown, they grapple with challenges that test their courage and resolve. Is their quest about conquering the world, understanding others, or discovering themselves? Each reader will find their own answer in this haunting fable, where the line between reality and imagination blurs, and fulfillment comes with a bittersweet twist. What truths will they uncover, and at what cost?

From the publisher

Some of us like the comfort of familiarity—staying close to the home we’ve always known, making a life, building a community. For some, the intimacy of the old routine is satisfaction itself. But the known is not for everyone. When our 5 protagonists get to wondering what’s on the other side of their island, they can’t stop until they find out. What follows is an epic journey of discovery, danger, imagination, and ultimately, bittersweet fulfillment. Is this sophisticated picture book about man versus earth? Man versus man? Or man versus self? Like our protagonists, every reader will find their own right answer in this haunting and deceptively simple modern fable.

This book is creative, engaging, and truly different from any other book on our shelf. The story is pretty bare bones, and the crayon illustrations are simple, so the whole book has the unlikely feel of a minimalist adventure. When I read it to my kids, I find myself hunting for metaphors and trying to unearth some essential truth from the book. And maybe it's there, maybe not--my kids just love the story.
