The Best Nest Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

A nest is a house built with a beak. No blueprints, no thumbs, no second trip to the hardware store — just mud, moss, spider silk, dryer lint, and a piece of somebody’s shoelace, woven into a bowl strong enough to hold an entire family through a windy April. Children notice nests before they notice much else about birds, which makes a nest the easiest door into the whole outdoors: something you can find on a walk, watch from a window, and check on again tomorrow.

Our editors went through Bookroo’s collection of 62 nest books and chose fourteen that reward that curiosity — nonfiction that names what a nest is actually made of, comic read-alouds about picky birds and unwelcome tenants, and stories in which a nest stands in for home itself. Start with the shortlist, then browse the age shelves for spring storytimes, first science units, and longer reading.
