The Best Werewolf Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A vampire is something a child meets. A werewolf is something a child becomes — and that one difference decides almost everything on this shelf. These are stories about a body that stops taking instructions once a month: the fur, the hunger, the sudden urge to run four miles at two in the morning, and the enormous practical question of what to say at school on Monday. Some characters are bitten, some inherit it from a parent who never explained, and a few are only accused, which turns out to be its own excellent kind of story — the new camp director eats his steak nearly raw, and a third grader will happily build the case.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 64 werewolf books, our editors chose the ones that do something with the change instead of merely announcing it: a lone wolf looking for a pack, a boy sprinting home to dinner on brand-new paws, a town where the children lock their parents up at the full moon, a boarding-school loner with a lighthouse to get to, and the beast that actually terrorized the French countryside in the 1760s. Start with our fixed list of 12 favorites, then follow the age shelves from first read-alouds up to middle-grade horror and graphic novels.
