Chiara Galletti

Chiara Galletti tried to choke on the umbilical cord, but she did not succeed so she was born. As a witty embryo had already realized how hard life was, but there was a way to tone down it, drawing! And so she took the pencil and drew its first sine wave line. She has already felt better! She is a children’s book illustrator and character designer. She has a degree in advertising at the University for Foreigners of Perugia and a specialization in E – design at the Academy of Digital Arts Nemo Florence. Currently She is working for Astound Agency as illustrator and she is organizing digital drawing workshop teens at Biblioteca delle Nuvole of Perugia. Chiara is very curious and loves learning new things and observing the world around her in every way possible: by traveling, by reading, by watching movies, by visiting art exhibitions, by meeting new people. Drawing for her is not a hobby or a job; it is a mission. She likes to make people happy with her art and her colors.

What do you hope young readers experience from your work?

I would like to create images to move readers, make them laugh and cry, create connection, empathy with the characters of the book, develop more awareness about emotions that are inside us. Color is a good instrument to do that!

Do you have a favorite children’s book?

My favorite children's book is the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, not the Disney version. The original version had moved me in the deep. A story about unconditional love, she gives up her greatest gift for the sake of happiness of another person. The happy ending doesn't include a forever happy couple, thanks to her sacrifice, in the name of true love, she gains the soul. A good lesson for future adults

What do you do when you're in need of some inspiration?

Usually I go outside and I try to do something unusual, new: Travel, If I can I take a flight otherwise a good walk in a new place near home it's fine anyway. I love to meet new people, they are a kind of "map" of new planet, you have to learn to read the map to really know them. People (and their life) and places are my best inspirations.

How did you come to the realization that you wanted to write/illustrate children's books professionally?

It's a mission inside of me. It is not a rational choice, it'a "gut choice", instinct. I was meant to be an illustrator!

When is your favorite time to work?

Night. The world outside seems to be under an enchantment, everything is calm and in silence to make room for my world of fantasy.

What do you hope to be remembered for?

For my imaginary worlds and characters that help people, young and adult, to dream, to feel better. I would like to touch their souls.

If you weren't a children's book author/illustrator, what would you do?

A lambs breeder.
