Maxwell Newhouse

Maxwell Newhouse was born in Campbell River, British Columbia August 1, 1947. Early in his youth he excelled in art. Content with the need to create, he made art his life’s passion. During his school years Max used any excuse he could to paint and draw. In 1970 he was accept to the Vancouver School of art as a third year student. This was in part due to the volume of work he had accumulated. In recent years, he has become particularly noted for his wonderfully detailed and lively folk art paintings with their whimsical themes and careful attention to the details of everyday life. During his career Max has displayed his artwork in various galleries across the country, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. His style has remained consistently naive and charming, leading itself wonderfully to children’s illustration. In 2001 he was published by Tundra Books using the style of art he has become known for. At present he has two illustrated children’s book and four author/illustrated, all with Tundra. Max and his wife Lillian have three children, two sons and a daughter. After living in Vancouver and the North Shore for 20 years, the family moved to the Fraser Valley and now lives in Harrison Hot Springs, BC. Along with Max’s love of painting and drawing he enjoys building driftwood furniture. Using unique pieces of driftwood, he fines on the shorelines of British Columbia. Max creates some interesting furniture from the treasures of wood he collects. The Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino British Columbia has many pieces in there rooms and lobby.
