What Does Bookroo Think of This Book

A mediocre construction-themed take on a classic nursery rhyme.

All about construction vehicles working to build a park, cheerful animal workers use excavators, cement trucks, and more equipment to build the kiddie pool, set up the park’s sign, and build sturdy playground pieces. After all the work is done, little animals excitedly enjoy the finished results as they play in the pool, climb the climbing wall, swing on the tire swing, and go down the slide. When reading the book’s text set to the text to the classic nursery rhyme “The Wheels on the Bus,” there are often too many syllables for words to fit effortlessly or easily. Phrases like “all through the construction site” instead of “all through the town” or “the drum on the cement truck goes” instead of “the wheels on the bus” cause stumbling and some extra effort to make the text fit. Construction fanatics will delight over this rendition of the folk tune, but ultimately the mismatched syllables throw off the tune creating a mediocre feel and overshadow the clever construction concept and adorable illustrations.

What Questions Should I Ask My Child

  • The park at the end of the construction project has fun features like a kiddie pool, a climbing wall, and the tire swing. What is your favorite feature at a park?
  • *The Wheels on the Dump Truck* shows different construction vehicles working to build the park. Which construction vehicle do you think is the coolest?

I grew up in Bangor, Northern Ireland and moved to England for art college in Liverpool, then London. I did a lot of formal studying, and learned a huge amount during that time, but I think my path towards a career in picture books began with my love of comics and cartoons, particularly “Peanuts”, the creation of my hero, the great Charles M. Schulz. Before I became a full-time illustrator and writer, I did many other jobs including teaching English, working in a bookshop and designing Christmas and Halloween signage for supermarkets! I work with publishers in the UK and around the world including Bloomsbury, Simon & Schuster, Little Tiger Press, Oxford University Press and Hinkler. My books have been published in Spanish (Castillian and Catalan), German, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, French, Finnish, Romanian, Afrikaans, Portuguese, Italian and this year, for the first time, in Scots Gaelic, Welsh and Hebrew!
