The Best Ant Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

An ant is small enough to disappear beneath a thumbnail and organized enough to run a city. Follow one underground and the sidewalk opens into nurseries, food chambers, fungus gardens, soldiers, farmers, and workers carrying loads that make the picnic basket look modest. Children’s books have made excellent use of the contrast: ants can explain a colony, arrange themselves into a multiplication lesson, argue for their lives, or turn a sugar bowl into a landscape as perilous as the moon.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 60 ant books, our editors chose thirteen that look closely at real ant lives and still know how to tell a story—from a first marching song and an unresolved playground debate to cut-paper migration, ant-eye kitchen danger, classroom science, and a leafcutter-ant graphic novel. Start with the shortlist, then browse picture books for read-alouds and early science or chapter books for independent readers.
