Basketball is the sport a child can practice alone. That solitude is why the books read the way they do—the player who is a head shorter than everyone else in the layup line, the one cut in October who is back in the gym by Monday, the summer legend nobody outside four blocks has ever heard of. A court is also small enough to take in all at once, which makes basketball the easiest game to draw and the hardest one to hide in.
