The Best Kite Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A kite is the only toy that needs the weather’s permission. You can own the best one on the block and still spend an afternoon in a field holding a string attached to nothing—which is why kite stories are so reliably about patience, invention, and the moment something finally pulls back. They are also, nearly always, about losing the thing: into a tree, over a fence, out of sight entirely. Picture books figured out a long time ago that a string running off into the sky is the easiest way to talk to a child about holding on and letting go without ever using those words.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 53 kite books, our editors picked the ones that hold up: a Caldecott Honor folktale, a real 1848 engineering contest fought across Niagara Falls, kite-fighting festivals in Lahore and fifteenth-century Seoul, giant paper barriletes flown over a Guatemalan cemetery, and the most famous tree in modern picture books. Start with our fixed shortlist of 12 favorites, then browse the board books and picture books by age.
