What's Wizardmatch About

Publisher Summary

Twelve-year-old Lennie Mercado’s grandfather, the current Prime Wizard of Pomporromp, is retiring and decides to host a tournament for Lennie and her cousins to compete to win his title, land, position, castle, and unlimited magical powers, but when Poppop introduces new rules to eliminate sibling rivalry, Lennie decides the games are unfair and makes plans to sabotage the event.

What Should I Know As a Parent

Families are unique and have different expectations for the books they choose to read. The following is a list of concepts included in this book that some parents may wish to seek out or avoid.

Potty Humor: This book contains a few mentions of poop, mostly in humorous ways. For example, "It was so silent Lennie could've heard a mouse poop."
Language: This book includes a few instances of name calling, including "butts" and "brats." This book also includes multiple instances of verbal arguments between family members (cousins, siblings, parent-child, etc.) during the competition.
Violence: This book includes Lennie and her brother, Michael, getting into a physical fight (wrestling/hitting).
Scary Villains and Characters: One of the challenges in the Wizardmatch involves ghouls. They are described as drooling and transparent with black eyes, and touching one will make you faint, but they aren't too scary.

Note that this list is not exhaustive and there may be concepts in this book that are not included or have been insufficiently or incorrectly detailed here.

What Questions Should I Ask My Child

  • Lennie is half Filipino and a girl, which she learns plays into her grandfather’s sexism, ageism, and favoritism when judging contestants. Have you ever seen discrimination take place, and what can you do to stop it?

  • Jealousy, anger, and pride create a lot of barriers between the family during the tournament. How do forgiveness and hard work combat these negative qualities?
