The Best Books About Force and Energy for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A forces unit is the rare piece of school science where every demonstration is already happening. A child pushes a chair and it moves; a child pushes a wall and nothing does. A ball rolls across the carpet and stops for no visible reason, which is friction, and rolls off the table for no visible reason, which is gravity. Energy is the same trick from the other side—the sandwich, the sunlight, the outlet, the wind outside all turn out to be one quantity wearing different clothes, moving from thing to thing and never quite disappearing. The books worth owning are the ones that name what a child has already noticed and hand back the vocabulary for it.

Bookroo’s collection of 122 force and energy books runs from board-book thermodynamics to a graphic novel about a mech that loses power, and our shortlist of thirteen covers both halves of the standard unit: the classroom explainers on pushes, pulls, friction, and gravity, and the clearest picture books on where energy comes from and where it goes. Two of the thirteen are board books, for the sibling who is too young for the unit and wants in anyway. Start with the shortlist, then use the shelves below—read-alouds and early nonfiction for the picture-book years, and longer science, comics, and a few good blackout stories for independent readers.
