In this large-format alphabet book, the letters of the English language come alive through the artwork of Austin-based fine artist Starla Michelle Halfmann. Children will learn and marvel as their ABCs become members of the animal kingdom, and adults will appreciate the beauty of this gorgeously rendered wordless picture book.
The illustrations of this cute book are amazing, even captivating. I myself didn't want to turn the pages too fast. Very fun art that helped the animals stick in my brain even after I put the story down.
Alphabet Kingdom is full of beautiful, kaleidoscopic illustrations. Each page is vibrant with color and life, and Staria Michelle Halfmann has a beautiful style. For a child who appreciates beautiful art, this would be a great choice. On the other hand, if children are interested in variety and words, this might not be the perfect fit. This book will catch the attention of most adults, but I'm less confident that it will interest most children. Still a favorite when it comes illustration-only, or at least, illustration-focused children's books.
This book is ALL about the illustrations, and boy, are they gorgeous. You don't even have to "read" this one to get everything there is out of it, so as long as little hands won't tear the picture book pages, they can have them full experience all by themselves. Worth noting that it is purely a single letter and then an image of an animal on each spread—no words (although luckily what each picture is is identified on the last page since I could NOT figure out what animal went with the letter N...Nyala).
Starla Michelle Halfmann is a fine artist based in Austin. She grew up on a farm in West Texas, where, immersed in nature, she chased butterflies and collected pretty things: shells, glass, rocks. The only access she had to art was a “P” (for painting) encyclopedia. She loves animals and paints them often. Her licensed work is carried at Anthropologie.
