The Best First Concept Books for Babies & Toddlers

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Somewhere between a first birthday and a third one, a child quietly builds the scaffolding that everything else will hang on: that a circle is still a circle when it is a wheel, that “big” only means something when there is a “small” standing next to it, that the noise the dog makes has a spelling. Concept books are how most of that work gets done. They look like the simplest things on the shelf — a page of red objects, a page of round ones, twenty-six letters and a pile of vegetables — and page for page they are asking more of a toddler’s brain than anything else that small hands can hold.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 3,091 first concept books, our editors chose fifteen that children ask for a second time: color books with a story attached, counting books that hide real arithmetic in the pictures, and word books sturdy enough to be chewed. Start with the shortlist, then use the age shelves below — board books for hands that grab before they look, and picture books for three- and four-year-olds who are ready to argue about whether they are big or small.
