Adorable mouse sisters Hazel and Twig find an egg and want to hatch it themselves – but is it really theirs for the taking? Hazel and Twig are playing in the meadow one day when they discover an egg. “Let’s hatch it together!” suggests Hazel, and they sit on it to keep it warm. But an egg takes a very long time to hatch, so the sisters decide to bring the egg home with them. Hazel dreams of all the ways they will take care of their new pet after it hatches – building it a nest, teaching it to fly, and finding worms for it to eat. But is there a bird out there who will miss their egg? Brenna Burns Yu returns to the enchanting miniature world of Korean-American mouse siblings Hazel and Twig in a story about sisterhood, observation and discovery, and lost things coming home. Abloom with delicate natural details, this tale is perfect for any kid who has ever asked “Can I keep it?”
The illustrations are charming, I love the sweet sister relationship, the egg hunt, and how they call their parents "Umma and Appa", but there wasn't enough story and by the end I was ready for it to be over
Brenna is an author and illustrator who lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut. Her first book, Hazel and Twig: The Birthday Fortune, is about two tiny mouse sisters. Even though the characters are mice, she used pictures of her daughters as drawing models. She tried to make Hazel and Twig look exactly like them, only…mice. She has a lot of fun thinking about what Hazel and Twig might eat, and to help with this she keeps a field guide to wild edible plants in the studio. When she finds an edible plant outside that she can identify, she sometimes even takes a little nibble. Her favorite media are ink, watercolor, gouache, and pencil. She is currently working on a new book about Hazel and Twig, and writing new stories about different characters, including some snails, a ghost and an owl, and a kid who wants to swim all night.
