Part of the Sheila Rae series
A fearless girl gets lost, but her sister's support saves the day.
Sheila Rae prides herself on being fearless, unafraid of thunder, lightning, or even the big black dog down the street. Determined to prove her bravery, she takes a new path home, leaving her cautious sister Louise behind. But when Sheila Rae finds herself lost, her bravado crumbles. Can her sister's quiet courage guide her back? This heartwarming tale explores sibling bonds and the true meaning of bravery.
Written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes, the nationally bestselling and celebrated creator of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Owen, and Kitten’s First Full Moon, Shelia Rae, the Brave is a warm, humorous, and loving story of sibling sympathy and support. Just because Sheila Rae is older, she doesn’t always know better!
“I am very brave,” Sheila Rae said, patting herself on the back. She wasn’t afraid of anything—not thunder, not lightning, not the big black dog at the end of the block. And when she wanted to walk home a new way and Louise wouldn’t, she called her sister a scaredy-cat and set out alone. But all the bravado in the world failed to help when Sheila Rae found herself lost. Luckily, her sister was not far behind.

“Sheila Rae is brave, even fearless, taking great risks like stepping on every crack in the sidewalk and walking backward with her eyes closed. She even growls at dogs, but when she gets lost on her way home from school, her courage falters. This is a great book for talking about courage and fear and stepping up to help someone else face their fears. I love that each of Kevin Henkes characters is unique and likable. Yea! Yea! Sheila Rae!”
