The Best Alaska Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

Alaska is a place where the ordinary rules of a children's book quietly stop applying. The sun refuses to set, and then refuses to rise. A dog team is transportation. A moose is a traffic problem. The nearest road may be a hundred miles away, or may not exist at all, and the fastest way to a friend's house is a river. Writers love it for the same reason children do: everything is bigger than it needs to be, and the weather is a character with opinions.

Bookroo's collection of 116 Alaska books runs from sturdy board books full of ravens and salmon to Iditarod picture books, bush-village classics, and survival novels where a wrong turn actually costs something. Our editors picked twelve favorites below—sled dogs, brown bears, a 1935 farming colony, the 1964 earthquake, and one Newbery Medal winner who talks her way into a wolf pack. After the shortlist, browse by age: first Alaska books for babies and toddlers, picture books about mushers and northern animals for ages three to eight, then chapter books and adventures for independent readers.
