The Best Earth Science Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Earth science is the one subject a child is standing on. The rock in the driveway, the puddle that vanished overnight, the crack in the sidewalk, the smell before a thunderstorm — these are all the curriculum, and they are all outside the door. It is also the branch of science with the best special effects: mountains that are still going up, an island off Iceland that did not exist before 1963, a canyon carved by a river that is still carving it, and a bed of ash under Nebraska from a volcano that went off in Idaho. Ask a seven-year-old what is underneath the basement and you have started a lesson that goes down four thousand miles.

Bookroo’s collection of 317 earth science books covers the whole planet the way a good class does — the rock cycle, plate tectonics, weather and the water cycle, oceans and rivers, and the deep-time history that ties them together. Our shortlist below is picked to span that range rather than stack up on one topic, and to mix the two things this subject needs: gorgeous nonfiction that makes a process visible on the page, and the field guides and comics a curious reader will go back to on their own. Underneath it, browse by age — first board books for toddlers, picture books and read-alouds for three to eight, and reference books, graphic novels, and longer nonfiction for readers seven and up.
