The Best Lighthouse Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 29, 2026

A lighthouse is a building with one job and no room for excuses. When fog closes over the water or a storm wipes out the horizon, its lamp still has to turn, the lens still has to be clean, and someone still has to climb the stairs. That combination of simple purpose and difficult work makes lighthouses unusually good story settings: they are homes, machines, landmarks, lonely outposts, and promises to ships that may never see the people keeping the promise.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of lighthouse books, our editors chose twelve that put the tower to work: Sophie Blackall’s Caldecott Medal winner, the little red landmark beneath the George Washington Bridge, a practical tour of lighthouse science, true accounts of keepers holding their posts, and island stories ranging from cozy animal family life to a Christmas marooning. Start with the fixed shortlist, then browse picture books for first visits and stormy read-alouds or longer books for history, mystery, and life beyond the harbor.
