The Best Safety Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Nobody plans the safety talk. It arrives in a parking lot, or at a pool gate, or the first time a child answers the door alone, and it has to do two contradictory things at once — name something genuinely frightening, and leave the child less frightened than before. Books are unreasonably good at this. A dinosaur getting the street crossing wrong, a lovebird refusing a kiss, a police dog silently demolishing every rule on the list: the story does the naming, and the child gets to be the one who already knows the answer.

Bookroo’s collection of 90 safety books covers the ground parents and teachers actually go looking for — body boundaries and consent, strangers and secrets, fire drills, traffic and water, and the first rules about being online. Start with our twelve favorites below, chosen for tone as much as content, because a book that frightens a four-year-old teaches nothing. Then work through the age shelves: board books for toddlers at the curb, picture books for the years of the big conversations, and chapter books for readers who would rather laugh at danger than be warned about it.
