These are some of our favorite books celebrating firefighters: their bravery, hard work and skill in knowing exactly how to put out fires and helping people feel safe and protected along the way. Whether your little one already loves firefighters or could be put at ease by seeing a little of what firefighters do behind the scenes so they don't seem as scary in all their gear, this is a great roundup of books to read about lots of different kinds of firefighters, some in their very official capacity as firefighters and others in more lighthearted settings showing they do many of the same things you and I do.

Thoughts from Grammy

I love this book! The catchy, rhyming verse keeps readers moving through the action with a sense of purpose, no hesitating as the firefighters rush into burning buildings to bring people out. In boldly drawn illustrations in primary colors with black and white the firefighters are shown moving through all their responsibilities from preparation, to fire fighting, to heading back to the station. There is a little dalmatian to be spotted on nearly every page. I love the way this book teaches respect for people in dangerous first-responder jobs.

The fire alarm sounds. The firefighter jumps in the truck and races to a daring rescue! Get ready for an adventure as Laura Godwin and Julian Hector celebrate one of our bravest everyday heroes in this board-book edition for little hands. Praise for This is the Firefighter (hardcover edition) "With its swift action, catchy verse, and appropriate palette (red, white, blue, and flame), this should find good use among preschool vehicle enthusiasts and new readers as well as in the 'community helpers' unit." -The Horn Book

Thoughts from Mom of Boys

This is a darling story. It tells the story through the eyes of a little boy. His mom seems to be his hero. I enjoyed that even though she worked hard being a firefighter, her son was still so involved in her life. He often joined her at the fire station and she was able to give a presentation at his school. It was an informative story about what firefighters do and how they keep safe while they are hard at work.

Billy spends time with his "second family" at the Floral Avenue firehouse where his mother works, and dreams of growing up to be a firefighter just like her.

Thoughts from The Book Snob Mom

Very cute illustrations and a great book for showing firefighters hard at work. I like that this book acknowledges that firefighters can be scared too (it's hard to be brave), for more sensitive readers the firefighter saves a puppy rather than a person trapped inside a burning building, and that it shows the long task of putting out a fire even after all of a building's occupants are saved.

Brr-ring! Up pops a fireman at the sound of the fire station alarm, and he rushes with his crew to put out a house fire in a nearby neighborhood. The family is safe, but one of their Dalmatian puppies is missing! It’s up to the brave fireman to rescue the pup from the burning house—and in the process, he finds himself a new firehouse friend.
