The Best Five Senses Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

Before a child can spell observation, the work has already begun: fingertips testing a fuzzy page, a nose objecting to the pickle jar, ears finding the garbage truck before the truck turns the corner. The five senses give young children their first practical way to investigate the world. They also make unusually good books, because a story about seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching can ask a reader to do more than sit still and listen.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 473 five senses books, our editors chose fifteen that turn noticing into a story, an experiment, or an invitation to play. Start with sturdy sensory books for babies, move into classroom-ready explanations and sense-rich read-alouds, and keep going to stories about sensory overload, blindness, and synesthesia — useful reminders that people do not all receive the world in quite the same way.
