Children’s Books About Shadows

The Best Children’s Books About Shadows

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 28, 2026

A shadow is a child’s first piece of science that behaves like a character. It stretches all the way down the sidewalk, hides directly underfoot at noon, copies every dance move without once being taught, and disappears the moment somebody switches off the light. No wonder children’s books cannot decide whether a shadow is evidence, a friend, or something with plans of its own. The best ones take advantage of all three possibilities.

Bookroo’s collection of shadow books begins with the simple question of how a body blocks light, then follows the answer into flashlight walks, wordless attic jungles, runaway silhouettes, groundhog weather, shadow puppets, and the occasional enormous rabbit. Our editors chose twelve especially strong read-alouds and classroom books below. After the shortlist, browse more picture books for ages two to eight and shadowy fantasy for independent readers.
