The Best Song Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

A song book is the only kind of book a child can read before she can read. She has heard the tune two hundred times, she knows the spider comes after the fly, and when the page turns she is not decoding anything—she is performing. That is why a three-year-old will “read” The Wheels on the Bus aloud, page turns and all, to a patient dog. Songs arrive early and stay, and a good song book gives the melody somewhere to live between singings: a fly you can watch go down through a die-cut hole, a fox crossing a moonlit town, a row of tabs to pull while the wipers swish.

From Bookroo’s collection of 354 song books, our editors picked twelve favorites that cover what a family actually sings: lullabies for the end of the day, cumulative songs that go on gloriously too long, folk ballads older than the country, and one honest-to-goodness songbook with piano arrangements. Start with the fixed shortlist below, then browse the age shelves—board books built for laps and car seats, picture books for story time and the classroom rug.
