Little Blue and Little Yellow
Little Yellow lives across the street. He and Little Blue hug so hard they turn green — and then neither set of parents recognizes them.
Yellow is the one color that cannot be turned down. Darken red and you get maroon; darken blue and you get navy; darken yellow and it stops being yellow altogether and becomes olive or mud. Yellow only exists bright — it sits at the exact wavelength the human eye picks up fastest in daylight, which is why school buses, safety vests, highlighters and warning signs are all the same color, and why it is the first thing a child finds on a busy page. That makes it a strange thing to build a quiet book around, and the ones that manage it are very good: yellow arrives as a sun, a ball, a leaf, a bus, or a marker that will not wash off.
Our editors went through Bookroo’s collection of books about the color yellow and chose thirteen where yellow is the subject rather than the scenery — the torn-paper classic where yellow hugs blue and disappears into green, a leaf that will not let go of its branch, a title fight between two primary colors, a wordless ribbon that becomes a lion’s mane, and a school bus that outlives its route. Start with the shortlist, then use the shelves below: board books for babies and toddlers hearing the word for the first time, and picture books for preschoolers and early-elementary readers ready to notice how much work one color can do.
