Booker T. Washington had an incredible passion for learning. Born a slave, he taught himself to read. When the Civil War ended, Booker finally fulfilled his dream of attending school. After graduation, he was invited to teach in Tuskegee, Alabama. Finding many eager students but no school, Booker set out to build his own school—brick by brick. An afterword gives detailed information on how the school was built.
Suzanne is the award-winning author of more than 130 children’s books. A mechanical engineer by degree, she enjoys writing on STEM topics, as well as fascinating historical figures.
NICOLE TADGELL was born in Detroit and studied art at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She has worked on more than twenty books and other projects for kids, including With Books and Bricks, Real Sisters Pretend, and Friends for Freedom. She lives in Grafton, Massachusetts.
