Growing up, I never planned to become a writer. My sister was the storyteller in our family and that was just fine by me. I loved reading books, playing music, and learning new languages.
Years later, when I became an elementary school teacher, all three “favorites” followed me into the classroom. During the day, I read great books, sang, and even taught kids who were learning English for the first time. At night, I practiced writing picture books. I did that for many years! Today, I’m lucky enough to write full-time. When I’m not at my desk, I'm usually outside, enjoying the sunshiny goodness of Arizona.
Some of my most favorite memories from childhood are of my grandmother reading stories to my sisters and me. We'd crowd around her on the bed, and she'd read books like Winnie the Pooh, Wind in the Willows, and Peter Rabbit.
I have MANY favorites! Here are a few: Pie is for Sharing by Stephanie Parsley Ledyard, illustrated by Jason Chin, the Princess Posey series by Stephanie Greene, Red Sings from Treetops by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski, and When Green Becomes Tomatoes, by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Julie Morstad.
Yes! I'm especially excited about GREEN on GREEN (Beach Lane/S&S), which will be published in Spring 2020. I've already seen illustrator Felicita Sala's early sketches and had a peek at her stunning color palette. The illustrations are going to be glorious!
Well, I was a teacher for 25 years, but if I had a chance to try my hand at a different profession, I would have liked to have been either an interior designer or a graphic designer.
