A twelve-year-old boy named Moose moves to Alcatraz Island in 1935 when guards’ families were housed there, and has to contend with his extraordinary new environment in addition to life with his autistic sister Natalie. A Newbery Honor Book & ALA Notable Book. Reprint. Jr Lib Guild & Children’s BOMC.
Part of the fun of reading is imagining yourself in situations and environments completely different to your own--and imagining myself as a kid growing up on Alcatraz Island was definitely an exercise in imagination! It was interesting to learn more about this historical landmark and think about what life was like for those who lived there. This book has a kind of flashy premise, but it actually has some real depth to it as well. All in all, it's a fun read for older elementary and middle school readers!
