The Best Children’s Books About Intellectual Disabilities

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Most children meet this subject long before they have a word for it. A new baby comes home and something is different. A boy in the next classroom talks in a way that takes patience to follow. An older brother is fifteen and still needs help with his shoes. Kids notice all of it, and what they usually want is not a lesson — it is a story where somebody like that is a whole person: funny, stubborn, good at one thing and hopeless at another, worth knowing.

Bookroo’s collection of 52 books about intellectual disabilities gathers exactly those stories — picture books for the sibling who just got a new brother, early chapter books for a classroom that is about to gain a new classmate, and middle-grade novels for readers old enough to feel the pull between loving somebody and being embarrassed by them. Several were written by authors raising these children, and one by a girl with Down syndrome herself. Autism has its own shelf on Bookroo, and a few of the best titles here overlap with it. Start with our thirteen favorites, then browse by age.
