Read the nine original stories in publication order, beginning with The House on East 88th Street. The early books introduce Lyle, the Primms, and wary neighbor Mr. Grumps before later adventures widen his family and neighborhood.

Meet Lyle is a 2022 I Can Read adaptation based on the feature film, not a tenth original story. It is shown separately as an optional movie tie-in.

Lyle is sometimes rejected because he is a crocodile: he is sent to a zoo, worries about losing his home, and works to earn a suspicious neighbor's trust. The stories answer prejudice and loneliness with generosity and belonging.

A house fire, zoo confinement, separation from family, and Lyle's search for his mother create real but age-appropriate tension. The tone remains affectionate, and the watercolor comedy keeps frightening moments brief.
