The Best Color Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

A toddler learns “red” the way she learns “dog” — by hearing it attached to enough red things that the word finally comes loose and belongs to the color instead of the wagon. That takes repetition, and it takes range: a red bird, a red hat, a red caboose, a red smear of paint on a mouse’s paw. Then, somewhere around four, the whole thing turns interesting again, because color stops being a label and starts being a decision. Blue can be a sky or a mood. Yellow and blue, pressed together, refuse to stay themselves. A crayon can be wrong about what it is.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 769 color books, our editors chose twelve that hold up on both counts: the board books that do the patient naming work, the preschool classics that let a child watch two colors become a third, and the picture books where color drives the plot rather than decorating it. Start with the shortlist, then use the shelves below — board books for babies and toddlers hearing the words for the first time, picture books for preschoolers and kindergartners ready to mix, sort, and argue about them.
