The Best Children’s Books About Marine Life

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 29, 2026

The ocean’s most important character may be too small to see. Phytoplankton catch sunlight near the surface, kelp builds underwater forests, coral animals raise cities from stone, and a fallen whale can feed the deep for decades. Sharks and octopuses are excellent scene-stealers, but marine life becomes much stranger — and more interesting — when children see the whole living system rather than a parade of animals with impressive teeth.

Bookroo’s collection of 1,516 marine life books spans first ocean words, richly illustrated science, biographies of marine researchers, conservation stories, and expeditions into water no human had visited before. Our ten favorites favor books that show how ocean life works: where energy begins, how a reef returns, what happens after a whale dies, and how scientists learned to map a world hidden under waves. Start with the shortlist, then browse board books for toddlers, picture books for ages three to eight, and longer nonfiction and stories for readers eight and up.
