The Best Books About Twins for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Twins arrive without a birth order to argue about. There is no before, no year of being the only one, no afternoon when the older child is walked into a hospital room and handed something new — they simply start together, and then spend a decade fielding the same question from strangers in the grocery line: which one are you? That question is why children’s books keep coming back to twins. Every child has to work out who they are; a twin has to do it standing next to somebody with the same face, the same birthday, the same teacher, and a permanent head start on every comparison anyone is about to make.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 456 books about twins, our editors picked thirteen where twinhood is the actual subject rather than a costume — the toddler years when one blanket finally has to become two, the picture books about being told apart, the 1949 Austrian novel that became The Parent Trap, and the middle grade and Newbery books where a twin says out loud that she would like to be somebody on her own. Start with the fixed shortlist, then work down the age shelves below. Fair warning about those shelves: the twins tag also collects a great many adventure and mystery series that simply happen to star a brother-and-sister pair. Twin readers love them, and they are excellent for a reluctant reader — but the shortlist keeps to the books where the relationship is the point.
