The Queen Bees of Tybee County
A basketball star discovers his true self in the world of drag and pageants.
The CALA Best Book Award is given by the Chinese American Librarians Association, a group founded in 1973 and affiliated with the American Library Association, and has been presented annually since 2007. It recognizes books originally published in North America, in English or in Chinese, that address Chinese Americans, people of Chinese origin, Chinese cultural heritage, or China, written by authors of Chinese descent.
Five categories are named each year — children's fiction, children's nonfiction, young adult fiction, adult fiction, and adult nonfiction — with honor books behind each winner. Two things make the youth half of the list unusual. Children's nonfiction has a category of its own, so history and biography are judged apart from novels and folktale retellings instead of losing to them. And Chinese-language titles published in North America compete on the same footing as English ones, which matters for a bilingual household looking for a book a child can meet in both languages.
