The Best Children’s Books About Values and Virtues

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Nobody learns honesty from a definition. A child learns it the afternoon someone could hand over a pot with a flower in it and hands over an empty one instead; learns generosity when the shoes that were wanted all year turn out to fit somebody else better; learns what a promise costs when keeping it means lying to your own family about the dog in the shed. Values are abstractions right up until a story makes someone choose, and then they become the most concrete thing on the page.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,242 books about values and virtues, our editors picked fifteen and arranged them youngest to oldest, because the hard part changes with age — a four-year-old is still working out that other people have insides, while an eleven-year-old is working out what to do when two things she believes point in opposite directions. Below the shortlist, the shelves sort the whole collection by age and format, and the topic links at the foot of the page break the umbrella back into the specific virtue you came for: kindness, honesty, courage, gratitude, patience, perseverance, and the rest.
