Everyone has a dog. Except for one little boy. He has a goldfish. He needs a dog. Mom says, “Why do you need a dog when you have such a nice goldfish?” But goldfish can’t catch sticks or go for walks or wag their tails…. Can they? Maybe they can…
This story has a great overall message in it, to want what you already have instead of wanting something you can't have. :) The boy learns to make the best of things, and instead of just wanting a dog, he learns to teach his goldfish to catch a stick, takes him on walks, and everyone ends up happy. :)
Gillian Shields is the author of Bloomsbury’s Mermaid SOS series and other books for young children.
My name is Dan. I’m an illustrator. I live and work in the United Kingdom and was born in Staffordshire. Ever since I was teeny, I have always had a crayon in hand and I would draw and paint all the time when I was young. I loved drawing so much that I went to study art at college and university. It was there that I discovered my work might be good enough for children’s books (luckily some nice people in publishing thought that too) and the rest is history! I’m lucky enough to have illustrated many titles for a wide range of publishers in both the UK and the USA. My most recent title is ‘But the Bear Came Back’ written by Tammi Sauer and published by Sterling which will be available in April 2018.
