The Penderwicks Books

Read the five numbered novels in publisher order, beginning with The Penderwicks and ending with The Penderwicks at Last. The books make substantial jumps forward in family time, and later volumes change which sister receives the most attention, but relationships and remembered events continue across the full sequence.

At Last is the publisher's stated finale and returns the family to Arundel, where the first book began. The complete collection and boxed set contain the same five novels rather than an additional story.

The family's mother died before the first book, and grief remains part of the sisters' lives. Later stories include a parent beginning to date, remarriage, new siblings, wartime worry, a child's misplaced guilt about a loved one's death, illness, and changing family roles. These subjects are handled gently but can be emotionally intense, especially in The Penderwicks in Spring.

Most conflict comes from misunderstandings, anxious plans, sibling friction, and unkind or controlling adults rather than physical danger. The publisher recommends the books for roughly ages 8–12; the warm ensemble cast and changing viewpoints reward readers comfortable keeping track of a large family.
