The Mysterious Benedict Society Books

For the main story, read the four numbered adventures in order: The Mysterious Benedict Society, The Perilous Journey, The Prisoner's Dilemma, and The Riddle of Ages. Book #4 returns to the same children after some time has passed, so it belongs after the original three rather than beginning a new sequence.

The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict is a prequel about Mr. Benedict at age nine. Publication order places it after the original trilogy and before The Riddle of Ages, which is a useful expanded order for returning readers. A child who wants to stay with Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance can instead read books #1–4 first and save the prequel for afterward.

Mr. Benedict's Book of Perplexing Puzzles, Elusive Enigmas, and Curious Conundrums is an optional activity companion. Its riddles and brainteasers are best enjoyed after the first novel has introduced the Society, but it does not continue the plot or count as book #5.

The mysteries include kidnapping, imprisonment, mind control and subliminal manipulation, threats to children, chases, fights, and dangerous escapes. Children sometimes fear that trusted adults or family members will be harmed. The suspense can be intense, but physical violence is generally not described graphically.

The books place unusual learning styles and different kinds of intelligence at the center of the team. Friendship, found family, courage, and cooperation matter more than any one child's ability. Hachette recommends the series for ages 8–12 or grades 3–7, though its long books and complex vocabulary may suit confident readers best.
