The Best Conservation Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 29, 2026

Conservation is less a slogan than a practice: count what lives in a place, learn what changed, decide what can be repaired, and keep at it. In these books, the work might mean planting trees, restoring coral, buying threatened land, protecting a turtle nest, or persuading a town to leave room for burrowing owls. The scale changes, but the question stays practical: what is worth keeping, and what will it take?

Bookroo’s collection of 618 conservation books spans wildlife rescue, habitat restoration, national parks, resource use, field science, and stories about communities deciding what to protect. Our editors chose twelve favorites that show children the work as well as the reason for it. Start with the shortlist, then browse sturdy first books, picture-book biographies and nature stories, or longer fiction and nonfiction for independent readers.
