The Best Superhero Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A towel, one safety pin, and a child is airborne. It happens in every house, and it happens for a reason that has nothing to do with movies: a five-year-old spends all day being the smallest person in the room, outvoted on dinner, bedtime, shoes, and haircuts, and a cape is the shortest route to being the one who decides. The good superhero books know this. The powers in them are almost never the point — the point is the moment the mask comes off, when a kid has to walk up to a real bully in a real cafeteria, or admit that the thing making them strongest is the thing they were embarrassed about, or work out that the person who has been quietly saving everyone is the grandmother in the kitchen.

Superheroes are also the corner of the catalog most crowded with licensed tie-ins, so drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,181 superhero books, our editors deliberately favored original stories: picture books with real jokes and real feelings, two Newbery winners built on comic-book logic, and graphic novels that do something the movies can’t. Start with our fixed shortlist of fourteen, then use the age shelves below — caped board books for toddlers, read-alouds about masks and secret identities, and chapter books and graphic novels for readers ready to argue about who counts as a hero.
