The Best Children’s Books About the Ocean

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

The ocean is the largest thing a child can point at on a globe and the least finished. We have mapped the surface of Mars in more detail than the floor of our own sea, which means the honest answer to “what’s down there?” is still, in places, nobody knows. Meanwhile it does its ordinary work: a wave that knocks a five-year-old over in July began as weather a thousand miles away, the tide takes the beach back twice a day without asking, and somewhere a lighthouse is doing the one job it has ever had.

Bookroo’s collection of 1,830 ocean books runs from bath-proof board books to middle grade novels, and our editors chose twelve that hold up on a second reading. You will find the ocean as science — how far down it goes, what it is like inside a submersible on the seafloor, who first strapped on a tank and swam off to look — and the ocean as a place people cross, wash up on, and watch from shore. Start with the shortlist, then browse by age: board books for toddlers, picture books for the three-to-eight crowd, and longer voyages for readers eight and up.
