Every zoo trip runs the same three acts: the animal everyone came to see is asleep, the animal nobody planned on becomes the favorite, and somebody has to be carried out past the gift shop. Children’s books know this. They also know the second story a zoo tells — the keeper arriving at dawn with a bucket of fish, the gorilla who has worked out exactly how the lock opens, and the question children ask far earlier than adults expect, which is who is really watching whom.
