Curious George at the Aquarium
George visits the aquarium, meets the penguins, and rearranges the whole afternoon.
An aquarium is a dark hallway with the lights on the wrong side. Children walk in expecting fish and come out talking about the jellyfish gallery that glowed like a lava lamp, the ray that let them touch it, the penguin that stared back for a full minute, and the octopus that was allegedly in the tank and was definitely not in the tank. Somewhere in every visit there is also a small person pressed flat against the glass while a shark goes by, deciding privately whether this is thrilling or too much.
Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of aquarium books, our editors chose thirteen for the two families who usually come looking: the one with a visit on the calendar and a child who needs to know what will happen, and the one setting up a first fish tank on the kitchen counter. The shortlist below runs from a toddler board-book tour to a middle grade graphic novel about a mermaid in a boardwalk tank, with true stories of real aquarium animals in between. Below that, the picture book and chapter book shelves hold everything else worth borrowing before the trip.
