The Book of Turtles
Turtles glow, breathe through unlikely body parts, cross oceans, and keep far more secrets than a shell suggests.
A turtle carries the essential piece of scenery with it. The shell can be a fortress, a home, a hiding place, or—in the hands of a picture-book artist—a hat rack, a cardboard box, and an excellent reason to draw the hero moving very slowly across a very large page. The real animals are stranger still: sea turtles cross whole oceans and return to the beach where they hatched, box turtles close their shells like doors, and giant tortoises may outlive several generations of the people studying them.
Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 246 turtle and tortoise books, our editors chose fourteen that balance beloved fictional characters with the animal itself: pet tortoises with formidable plans, hatchlings racing toward the moonlit sea, a classic fable, first nonfiction, true conservation stories, and a chapter-book rescue in the Galápagos. Start with the shortlist, then browse by age and reading stage—from touch-and-feel turtles for babies to independent reads about migration, habitat, and the difficult business of being ancient.
