The Best Books About Cities & Towns for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Ask a child to draw where they live and you get all the details a grown-up would have edited out: the bakery two doors down, the loud bus, the fire escape, the gap in the fence everybody uses. The books on this page take that instinct seriously. A street is not scenery in them—it is the thing the story is about. A house sits still while a city grows up around it. A boy is handed a red cape because the city is too loud to walk into otherwise. An entire alphabet turns out to have been hiding in lampposts and sawhorses the whole time. Places have plots, and children work that out long before anyone tells them.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 803 books about city and town life, our editors kept only the ones where the place itself is the subject—not every novel that happens to be set somewhere with traffic. That means neighborhood walks and bus routes, stoops and corner stores, twin towns on either side of a bridge, market days in Lagos, and small towns where everyone’s business is everyone’s business. Cities crowd this shelf, as they do the genre; the town books are quieter and worth hunting for. Start with the fixed shortlist of 15 favorites, then browse by age—board books for a toddler’s first tour of the block, picture books for the read-aloud years, and chapter books for readers old enough to notice a neighborhood changing.
