The Best Books About Light for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Light is the first thing a science unit asks children to notice and the last thing anyone actually looks at. It shows up free every morning, bends into a rainbow on the kitchen floor, gets stopped by one small hand and comes out the other side as a shadow, and then—right when a child would most like it to stay—leaves the room entirely at bedtime. That double life is why books about light split so neatly in two. Half of them are explaining reflection, refraction, and where the sun goes at night. The other half are about a firefly, a flashlight, or one lit window across the street doing the job the sun has stopped doing.

Bookroo’s collection of 52 light books covers both halves, and so does our editors’ shortlist of twelve: the clearest classroom explainers of how light actually works, a Caldecott Medal winner drawn almost entirely in black except for the light, a die-cut book you hold up to a window, deep-sea animals that make their own glow, and one small dinosaur with strong opinions about the dark. Start with the shortlist, then use the shelves below—picture books for read-alouds and hands-on science, and longer books for readers old enough to want the real physics.
