A memory can be a balloon, a jar, a quilt scrap, a story told so often that nobody agrees which parts really happened. Children’s books make the invisible wonderfully concrete. They also understand the unnerving part: memories fade, change hands, disappear after an accident, and sometimes belong to a whole family or country before they belong to one child. Remembering is how these characters find out who they are; forgetting is rarely as simple as losing a fact.
