The Best Music Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

Music reaches children before most other art forms have had time to introduce themselves. A baby bounces when the chorus arrives. A preschooler turns two wooden spoons and a saucepan into a regrettably effective drum kit. An older child hears one saxophone solo, one punk song, or one school orchestra and suddenly wants to know how a person learns to make a sound like that. The best music books preserve that first astonishment while showing that every finished performance began with listening, practice, and quite a lot of noise.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,397 music books, our editors chose fifteen favorites that give the subject its full range: rhythm you can feel, instruments you can name, musicians who changed what audiences expected to hear, and stories in which making music changes a family or a life. Begin with the fixed shortlist below, then browse the age shelves for baby-friendly beats, picture-book performances, and novels for readers ready to follow a melody through a longer story.
