The Best Survival Stories for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A survival story runs on one engine: everything a child normally leans on is gone, and what is left has to be enough. The plane goes down and nobody is coming. The village burns and the road out is on foot. The ship sinks, the town evacuates, the wolves are the only neighbors for two hundred miles. What follows is not really about danger — it is about a young person taking inventory of themselves and finding more in there than anyone, including them, had counted on.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 835 survival books, our editors chose ten that earn their fear honestly: wilderness and war, true stories and invented ones, a first chapter book for a seven-year-old and a Newbery winner for a confident twelve-year-old. Start with the shortlist, then use the age shelves below — picture books for readers who are still learning that lost can end in found, and middle grade novels for the ones who want fifty-four days in the Canadian bush with a hatchet.
