My Side of the Mountain Books

Read My Side of the Mountain, On the Far Side of the Mountain, and Frightful's Mountain in that order. The second book continues Sam's story with his sister Alice, while the third shifts much of the viewpoint to Frightful.

The official collected edition includes exactly these three novels, so Frightful's Mountain is the conclusion—not a separate animal series or optional companion.

The books celebrate independence and close observation of nature, but Sam survives by trapping, hunting, fishing, and preparing animals for food. Forest fires, severe weather, falls, a missing child, and danger to Frightful create suspense without making the series especially graphic.

Some survival choices should be read as part of the story rather than as a modern how-to guide. The later books also introduce conservation rules and the tension between caring for an individual wild animal and protecting a species.
